Maiden Voyage

Okay. Here it is. First blog.

I'm watching the news, where the newscaster just enthusiastically reported a World Record being attempted (and perhaps won) for most knee bends performed while standing on an exercise ball.

A poor man is standing in a clearing on a big fat yellow exercise ball while several observers are sitting on lawn chairs and watching him attempt this. You can tell that in the background, cocktails are being poured, a warm breeze is blowing, good things are happening. Yet here he is, on this ball, putting the rest of his life on hold, trying for a record.

Maybe it's because I'm a woman and have a lower pain threshold for humiliation and sweating on national television, but why would someone want to do this? What is this need to break records? Do we kid ourselves about the worth of 15 minutes of fame? Is this person thinking that his life will somehow be bigger or better when he does that last knee bend? Do we have a tiny belief in the back of our heads that something amazing will happen to improve the health of the universe if we face a limitation of any kind? Is it just a need to thwart the failure that occurs if he falls off the ball? Or, is he just ignoring the dishes in the sink, the rent check that needs to be paid, the screaming kids, and whatever else he'd have to think about if he weren't doing knee bends?

Inquiring minds want to know.

So, this is probably a lot of what my blog will be about. Thinking about what's going on in the world, inviting people to the table to chat, and jus' yappin' about whatever's on my mind.

Unless I change my mind.
